Due to the...ahem...insistence of two of my loyal readers, I am posting an update even though I want to get some sleep!
The trip to San Antonio was way better than I could've imagined. Mikey and I headed out at a reasonable hour after a delicious Chick-Fil-A breakfast, and we checked into our hotel around 1:30. My aunt suggested the Crockett Hotel, and the rooms sure were small, but the view was fabulous, and the location was perfect. We were literally across the street from the Alamo. So we went to the Riverwalk to grab some lunch, but of course we got stuck behind every 90-year-old person and stroller for miles around, so we took in the scenery because we had no choice. Once you've walked up and down the Riverwalk once a trip, you've pretty much seen it all, so we headed to the Alamo. Many of you probably know that I positively suck at history, and I never retained a darn thing I learned in any of my history classes. That always makes me feel unedumucated, so I decided to try to really soak in the history of the Alamo. Lucky for us, a 20-minute history talk was starting as we walked in the door, so we tagged along. The old man giving the talk was so interesting and passionate about the things he was talking about that I just couldn't help but be drawn into the story. I was astonished at how much I took in and how fascinating it really was. So it seems I need to make it a priority to go to historical locations and hear people recount the stories because it seems so much more relevant that way. So, for those of you who don't know your Alamo history, look it up! Or just ask me...Ha ha just kidding. I'm not that good.
Mikey and I got all spruced up (and watched Pauly Shore in Son-in-Law) at the hotel and headed to my grandmother and step-grandfather's combined 160th birthday party. I hadn't seen either of them since my high school graduation, so I was super nervous. But Mikey helped calm my nerves, and all went well. We hung out with family I never get to see, and it was great to reconnect with them. There were 120+ people there! I hope I know that many people when I'm 80!
I couldn't just let Mikey's night consist of small talk with random people he'd never met, so we then went to Howling at the Moon on the Riverwalk. It's a piano bar set up like Pete's Piano Bar in Austin (which I've actually never been to but might get to check out this weekend). There were countless bachelorettes having their parties there, and they were utterly humiliated at every possible point. It was great fun to sing along and act silly.
On Sunday, it was time to really act like kids because we went to Sea World!! We'd both been before, but never together. We watched a sea lion show, a ski show, and of course Shamu's show. They were all incredible, as expected. Seals and sea lions have always been my favorites, but those killer whales were unbelievable. We rode a roller coaster, fed the dolphins, learned about penguins, saw some scary-looking sharks, waded through seas of children, and then made our way back to the car right as the bad weather was rolling in. All in all, it was a wonderful mini-vacation.
