The big day

I am such a delinquent birthday blogger! It's not the actual writing that holds me up. It's the photos! We always take so many pictures, and it takes me forever and a day to decide if *this* half smile is better than *that* smirk on William's face. So silly - it's not like keeping both photos is going to make my computer start smoking!

Anyway, he had a wonderful first birthday with a very small party. His mama isn't quite ready yet to host all the adorable kiddos we know. I need to go to a few more kid birthday parties to figure out what in the world you do to entertain them and keep them all safe!

We gave William a wagon for his birthday. He and I have been tearing up the road in our neighborhood, showing off his new ride. It has two seats with seat belts, a little storage box on the outside, and a canopy to help block the sun. It's a far cry from the squeaky metal wagons from the olden days.

The actual day of his birthday was filled with preparations for his party. We sang "Happy Birthday" and Skyped with Jennifer in the morning. Beyond that, it was business as usual for the little guy. When he woke up from his afternoon nap, there were already people at our house. He definitely woke up on the wrong side of the crib, so it took a bit of effort from everyone to cheer up the birthday boy. After he ate and spent a bit of quiet time upstairs (that often rejuvenates his spirits), he was ready for presents! He enjoyed opening them, while Mikey and I decided it was a bit like a shower with all eyes on us. It was a strange feeling!

After presents, it was cake time! Mikey and I made him a homemade carrot cake. I honestly thought the end result was kind of gross. Well, maybe not gross, more like just OK. But William had never had cake, so he was delighted! We didn't make our guests eat the just OK carrot cake. They had yellow cupcakes with chocolate icing and ice cream.

All in all, William's first birthday was a low-key, celebratory day spent with some of our favorite people. It was capped off with a fun Skype from Texas to Connecticut. Skype is definitely my favorite discovery of 2009!

Multi-tasking at an early age. He can open birthday cards and play in his cabinet all at the same time.

Money for that Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle that his mom will never get him!

Hopefully Grams and a little milk will cheer him up.

Family picture in the back yard.

Look out! Here I come in my new Winnie the Pooh airplane!

What a lucky guy.

"Must...touch...fire."

I adore the excitement in his face here.

Sizing up his opponent.

"The cake feels so good on my...chest?"

"I have you right where I want you."

Yes, folks, those beautiful blue eyes are available for movie and commercial shoots.

All done!

The first in a series of annual photos with this lovely birthday hat.

"What is this crazy thing you stuck on my head?!"

Looks like fun.

One piece of birthday advice I received early on: one child guest for every year old he is. Seriously. This is the rule I used for you and never regretted it!
