Back in January, the legendary Pink House was sold. It did not get the use it once did, and it was time for my mom to let it go. This was not easy on our family, but we absolutely cherish all the memories we have there. On my last visit down there (to help Neil with a garage sale), I took an obscene number of pictures similar to the one above. My mom pointed out that it makes total sense because as a child, I was very fixated on the spaces between the boards. I do remember thinking those spaces were going to swallow me up! Looking down at the water through them was hypnotizing to me.
One positive aspect of the Pink House sale is that we got to give new life to some furniture and other items that were in the house. I think my favorite thing is our kitchen table. Mimi told me it is from the '60s, and it was the first dining room table my great-grandmother ever had. It is in amazing shape (other than one chair that nearly split in two and was comically put back together by Neil and Mikey). The table is so special for me because we sit there three meals a day, and it such a central part of our family life. I love to think back on all the family meals that were served on the table at the Pink House.
We also got a couch, a leather ottoman that folds out into a twin bed (we use the ottoman as a reading spot in William's room), the famed bar stools that spin super fast and are at least 50 years old, and various other things that get daily use around here. I thoroughly enjoy seeing bits of the Pink House all over our house!
Farewell, old friend. I treasure the memories!
