Happy Birthday, Mimi!

It was impossible to forget my grandmother's birthday today. I guess that's one benefit of having a grandmother named Rita right about now. It seems nasty old Hurricane Rita is headed our way in the next 48 hours. We don't have work tomorrow or Friday, which I really appreciate my company doing for us. I think I will sleep in tomorrow (looks like I won't go to bed anytime soon), try to gather all the material things I can't live without, pack up the cats, and head to my parents' house. It's possible I will wait until Friday morning in order to get one more decent night's sleep here, but I'll more than likely pack it up tomorrow.

We still haven't made the final evacuation decision. My mom is confident that their house could easily ride out the storm as it's positioned now; however, if it shifts more toward Galveston, we may hightail it out of here. Although our "hightailing it" would not be pretty! We would have three vehicles, three adults, one 86-year-old (very nervous) woman, an 11-year-old smart aleck (OK I have to say that, he's my brother), three cats, a neurotic dog, and another dog that just got out of the doggie hospital yesterday--he is still wearing that huge plastic cone around his head and is on tons of medication, so I'm sure it would be oh-so-fun to pack him in a car.

Cell phone service started sucking this morning, and it's just gotten worse. I'll probably be reachable by email until late Friday/early Saturday (assuming we don't evacuate), but the phones are completely unreliable. It just shows me how much we all rely on them to communicate.

On another note, my family has had a house in Palacios, TX, for decades (we call it the Pink House because...well duh...see pictures). The path has shifted ever-so-slightly tonight, but this hurricane is still set to go over the Pink House as a Category 4 or 5. It was hit a couple of years ago by a Category 1, and the roof came off, the garage was destroyed, all the piers on the bay were gone, etc. Basically, if the Pink House takes a direct hit, it will not survive. I had that major realization at work today and totally broke down. That house means so much to my family and particularly my mom. They went down there today and grabbed all they could. Mom asked me what I wanted her to grab, and the thought that all we may have from the Pink House I know are a few barstools and a couple of old couches is just too sad to comprehend.

But what can you do? Try to keep yourself and your family safe, and hope for minimum damage to your stuff. Only time will tell.
